(More customer reviews)I've been through three digital cameras and this one has far been the best. It fits in my front pocket, even wearing blue jeans, and takes great pictures in a flash. The screen is large and very clear and the battery will last through several days of pictures and constantly turning it off and on. I haven't gone through all the features and photo settings, such as museum, landscape, & party modes, but the ones I have used are helpful in getting just the right shot in many different situations. Highly recommended.

This one doesn't seem to fit all the way in, so there is a bit of a gap between the end of the cap and the back metal clip of the hotshoe. I might try to shave it a bit with a knife, but I am disappointed it doesn't go to the edge and dust could still get in.
Update ... I found my original cap and they look the same at simple inspection, BUT ... the original says Nikon BS-1, while this one doesn't say anything, so it is definitely not manufactured by Nikon. By visual inspection it's almost impossible to tell why this one doesn't fit well. It seems like the stops under the cap are not quite the same height or position, but it is not by much. Just enough to not let the cap go in all the way. I am glad I found my cap, although after I bought this one. The price is not too bad (considering that it is less than a nikel worth of plastic) but the shipping is ridiculous (over $6 for something that will not add weight to a regular letter) ... this is a lot to pay for a small piece of plastic that "doesn't quite fit".

(More customer reviews)I'm a rabid photographer of scenery, wildlife, friends, families and pets. I take pictures with tripods, while walking, from horseback, from the car, during parties, indoors, outdoors...whenever it strikes me to take a photo. I would estimate that I take at least 300 photos a month. I currently have an olympus 740 so I bought the nikon looking to get a little smaller camera with the same zoom capabilities but with image stabilization. I read the manual to this camera from cover to cover and it has lots of options to tinker with. I took more than 1000 photos in every situation I could think of and eventually ended up returning the camera because of the medium indoor low light issues.
The good:
The camera has a NICE brushed metal feel to it. Looks like it would hold up well and not show scratches easily and feels quite sturdy.
It's really comfortable and easy to hold the camera and either telescope the lens or press the shutter without straining your hand.
The LCD has great resolution and colors. Some people don't like that it doesn't have a viewfinder but I hardly use a viewfinder.
Rechargable battery (although the initial charging time is something like 8 or 10 hours, the later chargings are less).
The lens cap just flips back with an easy touch, no pulling it off and having it dangle and bounce into action shots.
The camera worked great for scenery shots during the day.
I took some great moonlight shots without the use of a tripod with this camera using some of the many, many features. My other camera could never take these shots.
I liked that there wasn't an external telescoping lens and the lens did all its telescoping inside the cylinder.
I was impressed with the shutter speed and zoom capabilities.
Image stabilization was awesome in sunlight.
What I didn't like:
I found that ANY dust on the lens created an orb in the photo and I had to keep cleaning the lens because dust would easily get into the cool snap cover.
Low indoor light made for blurry (or sometimes grainy images), even with image stabilization and I had to tinker with a lot of the settings to get half way decent photos and even then they weren't great.
If I used a flash in low light, it often whited out people's faces. My friends thought that the flash was too blinding but I can't speak for this because I didn't see it. I used tons of settings (much to my friends' frustration) to try to find a good setting and I didn't find one.
Direct sunlight caused lots of sunspots (I think because of the lens angle because the same exact shot with my olympus had no sunspot and it was seconds between shots)but you could use polarizing sunglasses over the lens for a super easy fix.
The light from the flash doesn't always bounce as one would expect. I'm not sure if it's because of the angle of the turned lens cylinder or what but it the light didn't seem to spread naturally and would end up either too focused or weirdly casted shadows would appear. Again I'd take the same photo with my olympus which has a different flash placement and the photos would turn out fine.
I took some shots of my pets indoors and they didn't like the flashing red light the camera uses for measuring/focus in low light.
I had a lot of color issues (mostly a yellowing of the images) under flourescent lights in a lot of low light photos but I could fix them Adobe photoshop.
This could have been a bad camera but just in case you buy this and have the same issues, you'll know it's not just you :)

(More customer reviews)Having recntly purchased a Nikon P100 camera that uses a EN-EL5 battery, I wanted to purchase an additional battery to take on an upcoming trip to Russia. I was also looking for a quick charger to use in place of the method that Nikon provides on this camera (plug in a power supply into the camera to charge the battery in place). This package seemed too good to be true! It offered a spare battery, a rapid charger, a 12 volt adapter for the charger, and an adapter to use the rapid charger in Europe/Russia. Several reviews made comments about the battery not fitting and that the battery was smaller in rating than a Nikon. Still, for the price,it was hard to pass up.
Well, after receiving the battery, charger, adapters, and then using the charger to charge the battery, I proceeded to check out the new battery in my Nikon P100 with the following results:
First, the Nikon battery is rated at 3.7Volts and 1100 mAh - the replacement battery is rated at 3.7 Volts and 1300 mAh (that is a larger battery than the original battery!).
The original Nikon Battery was charged in place according to instructions and lasted for 350 pictures (mix of telephoto shots and close-up shots). The replacement battery lasted for 400 pictures of the same type of mix.
The replacement battery fits with no size issues in the Nikon P100 - by virtue of fit, you could not tell the difference between the batteries.
Second, the charger does feel like cheap plastic, but it works as advertised, does have an AC plug that retracts into itself, and does have LED indicators for charging (red) and charged (green).
The adapter for Europe/Russia is exactly the same one sold at our local luggage supply store for more than the entire cost of the battery kit!
The 12 volt adapter is short coil cord unit (stretches to about 3 feet) with a power indicator light (red led) on it. It works just fine, but is not very long (would work with most cars if you are careful).
Finally, the battery that was included in the package also comes with a terminl protector to prevent accidental discharge! This cap fits easily on the battery and ensures you do not wind up with a hot pocket if you are carrying change and your spare battery in the same pocket!
All in all, I highly recommend this combination for the Nikon P100.

I doubt many people are still buying or using the P1, P2, S1 and S3 these days. The good news is that this is the same battery used in the newer versions of Nikon's S class cameras, including the Nikon Coolpix S52 and the Nikon Coolpix S52c.
I don't know if any newer P series cameras still use the EN-EL8, as several I have purchased appear to use AA batteries. But the S5x series cameras definitely use this battery and charger, as I have owned several and this is compatible with all of them.
The small indicator light on the charger will blink till it is charged. When the light turns solid, it is important to remove the battery so as to not over-charge it. While this charger appears to not overcharge (I've left it in a little longer by accident) it's impossible to tell and I am incredibly paranoid about burning out those LI-ON batteries.
Charging is quick and generally done within about an hour. I have no complaints with the way it works.
But I do have to deduct at least 1 star for the price, which seems slightly high for what it is.
There are other chargers made by 3rd parties, but I stick with Nikon branded ones to protect my investment and preserve the life of my batteries.
While all Nikon cameras that use rechargeable batteries generally come with chargers, having an extra is a must for travel or convenience. Definitely grab one if you have an S5x series camera or another one that uses the rechargable lithium-ion EN-EL8 battery.

(More customer reviews)With the standard proviso that tech stuff always gets better and cheaper, I highly recommend this new camera model for the low price. I have only had it for two days, since Nikon didn't warranty my broken LCD screen on my L4. Please do be careful with the fragile nature of these electronics! I didn't drop it or abuse it, and it apparently broke in my pocket within a padded case!
Back to the L10, most everything is better than the previous, low end, L cameras, with improved sound, and what is great for me, voice recording capacity, outside of 20 second voice memos attached to a particular photo. While digital voice recorders are cheap for PCs, I have a Mac and previously, only iPods with accessories, or other costly recorders, can create sound files to be then imported to your computer and then burned to CDs. With just a 512 MB card, you can record for hours.
The image quality is a bit bluish, some color cast that hopefully can be corrected with software. The sharpness looks O.K., and for the price, it's fine for me. This makes a great back-up camera, as I use another more expensive L series camera. On the road, I can't afford missing a great scenic shot, or hundreds of those.
The L10 is smaller and slimmer than the L4. It carries well in your pocket. It has slightly simpler buttons and controls. The lens retraction is quicker on shut-off, and the zoom is rather abrupt. Other new, handy features are characteristic of the planned obsolescence of most tech items. Goodies that will have you wanting to upgrade!
It will remain to be seen how durable this camera turns out to be, but I have high hopes. I intend to be more careful, and never subject this beauty to shock or any possibility of drops.
Speaking with a tech support rep, you need to have nickel metal hydride batteries with more than 2000 mAh worth of power, in lieu of what they recommend (Nikon-approved rechargables). Some of my Ray-o-Vacs aren't.
I'm using only the approved SD cards, but they now support up to 4GB cards. That's great if you can trust the card not to fail--why I buy several in smaller capacities, and therefore don't have all my eggs in one basket. You'll get enough memory, then at 4 GB, for probably then, a few thousand photos storage.
One major thing they can work on are the streaks that still appear in movie mode when faced with bright reflections or sun. Not as bad in earlier L's, these don't appear in final still images, but are seen in movies. You then have to remember not to shoot movies outside of evenly lit scenes. My older Coolpix cameras didn't have this problem. The movie quality is pretty good, but a bit down from my movies using my L5. Shooting movies of a train, the bells and horns are much clearer sounding than the earlier models.
Despite what the ads say, I can find no VR feature on this model, and nothing about it in the manual. Unless it is enabled all the time, which it seems to be not, you may wish to wait till this excellent feature becomes standard on all models. For more serious photographers, VR is included on the higher end, new L's.
Also, I see nothing about ISO capability to 800, but I haven't yet tried night or low light scenes. One telephoto came out blurred, with no blur warning, there.
All in all, this is fantastic technology, all at a highly affordable price, and although Nikon isn't the top rated brand as it used to be, I'd get this as a first, around-the-home and back-up, digital camera, if you haven't owned a good one yet.

(More customer reviews)I bought this for my daughter's 15th birthday, to protect her new Nikon L110. She is, much like both her parents and many 15-year-old girls, a bit on the clumsy side. This bag is a great fit for her L110 and offers enough protection to survive all the abuse she can dish out, and, with the clutzy genes she has inherited, that's saying a lot. I thought the price was a bit high and a Tamrac or other brand of bag would have offered the same level of protection at a better price, but if you want to stay with the brand name of your camera - as my daughter did - it is a good choice. Were it for me, though, I would consider something by another gadget bag maker. Again, that would not be due to the quality, but because of the price. But if you want something you can find for the L110 and similar models without a bunch of searching and comparing, it is a good choice.

(More customer reviews)I found the last generation of coolpix cameras to be disappointing at best. This one however has received some massive improvements.
1. It's very very fast
It is speedy in all ways possible. The shutter response time in almost instantaneous. As soon as you click the button the photo takes... give 1 additional second in poor lighting at worst. Best of all is the photo navigation. Remember those old coolpix commercials where Ashton Kutcher would flick his finger and all the photos would scroll by fast? That never worked before, but it actually does on this one. There is no lag whatsoever on photo viewing or changing settings.
2. Excellent photo quality
I was playing with this in best buy and it took very noticeably clearer photos than the other camera in the same price range... including the Canon powershots. Its actually what made me decide to buy one before I learned all the other good stuff.
3. Functionality
It doesn't allow manual exposure and aperture controls because of its size. However they give you a ton of different scene modes to play around with. Some are a little too niche to matter, but all the main ones are there. Also you can do lots of adjustments to a photo that has already been taken. These are made even easier by using the little included stylus which hangs off your camera strap. The camera has a very good feature which allows you to choose the focus of your picture simply by tapping it on the screen. Finally a purpose to using a touch screen besides flashiness.
4. Looks
Its slim and the screen is large and clear. It's very minimalistic with only 2 buttons on the back. The camera looks very traditional and minimalistic, like most of the coolpix range. It doesn't look or feel cheap by all means, but you're not gonna turn heads when you use it... unless of course you're caught scrolling your library (which does feel pretty cool).
The Bad Parts
This camera only has a couple of negative issues. First off, the lens does not retract into the body when you're viewing photos. It means you can switch to shooting really fast, but it also burdens the way in which you can hold your camera. I would have liked to have been able to hold it flat in my palm while looking at my photos. Another problem is that it doesn't use a battery charger, it charges with a usb cable that plugs directly into the camera. It comes with an AC power adapter that you can plug the cable into if you want... kind of like what an ipod uses. I guess it makes everything simpler and you can carry less stuff when you travel, but I like to charge extra batteries while I'm using my camera.
The touchscreen has a slightly matte surface. Which means it gets very dirty very fast. I put a surface shield on this immediately and it has eliminated that problem completely... but it also makes the touch controls slightly less responsive. If you do this, you can still control the camera well with your finger, but it's faster and easier to navigate photos with the stylus.
I HIGHLY recommend this camera to anyone needing a good point and shoot, especially if speed is important to you.

Nikon TC-E15ED Tele-Converter Lens Review

(More customer reviews)The item does extend the zoom range. (But, one has to purchase the adapter separately to use it at all. It's not expensive, but it should come as a package since the lens is useless without it!)
It comes with caps for both ends. However, the adapter has to come off to use the one for that end of the lens. The cap does not fit the camera end of the adapter. Either you take it apart - which leaves you with a piece capable of scratching other things - or leave the end open. The bag provided does accomadate the two pieces and offers some protection from scratches, but not dust.
Attaching it is easy enough. But, having to do a quick change from normal to the telephoto or vica-versa is not amoung it's virtues. Of course, some of this has to do with the menues of the camera, since one has to change the lens setting too. Resign yourself to just shooting for distance, or carry a second camera to avoid missing an opportunity wihtin normal range. You KNOW how uncooperative wildlife can be!
Most focusing is done by the camera's autofocus. You can do
some general range-finding with the camea's zoom control. Then it's up to the camera. Having the menues set for the correct white balance and focus options is also important because it helps the autofocus.
In short, it does the job as long as one knows how to use all the camera's options to assist.

(More customer reviews)Over the last couple of weeks I've bought all three, returned the Canon
and Panasonic. Here's my opinion (again this is mostly opinion, not
fact):
- P300 and S95 are almost the exact same size, LX5 was too big (i.e., too
thick for a pocket)
- P300 and LX5 both have direct video record buttons
- LX5 and S95 both shoot RAW (wasn't a factor for me, but may be for
you)
- All three have great picture quality (1. P300, 2. S95, 3. LX5)
- Two have great video quality, S95 is just OK (1. LX5, 2. P300, 3. S95)
Because I have an SLR for high-quality pictures, I just want a portable
p&s for when I don't feel like carrying an SLR. That factor hurt the
LX5, which I thought was the best camera, just not pocketable.
The LX5 had great video, really fast focusing (for pics and vid), and
strong build quality. It's JPEGs were the worst of the three, but third
best in this class is generally better than 1st place in a lesser class
of cameras. It felt solid. I liked the direct video record button. I
disliked the lens cap.
The S95 never did much for me, it's pics were good but not better than
the P300. It's video was definetly the worst of the three, but again,
solid for a point and shoot. The ring around the lens was cute, but felt
loose to me. The lack of a direct video record button was limiting and I
found the auto pop-up flash annoying (it pushes your finger out of the
way, both other cameras have mechanical flash pop-ups).
The P300 is great. Love the picture quality and video quality. Warning,
the video is jumpy on pans, this camera won't take the place of an HD
video camera, but it's great for a point and shoot. The direct video
button is great too. The lcd screen is beautiful. The camera turns on
and snaps very quickly. Shot to shot is excellent too. Picture quality
is great (again, I'm a JPEG user, if you're all about
RAW-post-processing-for-point-and-shoot-quality-pics you may have a
different experience).
You can slice this opinion a million different ways, all three are
awesome cameras. Pick what the most important factor or two is for you
and decide based on that. For me, the discriminators were size and video
quality (as they all took great pictures).
Update 1:
After using this camera extensively for a week or two I've come to appreciate it more. Some of my recent findings which may or may not be helpful to you the reader:
- Indoor video can take on a soft appearance and the colors can be off under certain lighting conditions in auto mode, however, it appears that manual tweaks in the program/manual modes carry over from photo to video. So you can set the AWB to a better lighting mode in one of the manual modes and simply switch modes as the lighting situation dictates. Outdoor video continues to be outstanding in auto mode.
- The creative modes (black and white, soft, etc.) can also be used for video, again you will need to be in a program/manual mode (P, A, S, M). Of these I do find the black and white to make interesting video depending on what you're shooting.
- The fast motion and slow motion modes for video are quite fun to use (they may not be all that useful, but they're fun).
- The panning motion panorama (easy mode?) combined with the Nikon software if pretty impressive. The stitched assist mode panorama works well too. It's particulary impressive in multiple monitor set ups, I can spread the picture across 3 screens and see an impressive panorama.
- Having no "welcome screen" is the way to go if you want a quick start up.
- The camera does not weigh much, it's a little off-putting at first, but light is good.
- I love being able to decide if the flash should be used by flipping the switch because I usually do not want a flash (fill flash is all I use pretty much) and it's apparent by looking at the camera if the flash is on or off, there's no digging into menus to find out.
- If you're reviewing your work (via HDMI for instance) on the camera or a tv you can press (and hold) the play button instead of power to avoid opening up the lens.
- The battery has provided a long life per charge, I haven't tested it but it may be better than advertised. Two drawbacks: it goes from fully charged to empty without much warning (icon is full, and then it's down a bar for a few minutes, then empty) and you plug the camera in to charge vs putting the battery into a charger (that's a draw back because you can't swap a fresh battery in and charge at the same time, if you buy the separate charger you can do this. I bought both an extra battery and charger to avoid any power outages).
- Applying after effects in the camera works well and the camera automatically copies the original.
- This is a piece of advice that will be obvious to some (ok, it's really for my mom): set the date and time accurately and don't have the date imprinted on your pictures. This info is part of the "meta data" that you can see on any computer. You want an accurate date so you can sort photos later if required and you don't want the date imprinted on the photo because it ruins the picture and is already in the meta data.

(More customer reviews)This is my first digital camera, so I don't have anything to compare the 3500 to, but overall, this is a good, fun, camera and I'm glad I picked it up. It's easy to use, especially for a beginner. I was able to take pictures right out of the box. You can carry it around with you in your pocket, so it's easy to bring with you anywhere. The pictures it takes vary from exceptional to so so, in my opintion. The camera performs especially well when you have lots of light, giving sharp focus and stunning colors. If you are indoors in dim light, the camera has trouble focusing and the pictures come out somewhat grainy. I've really only used the auto settings, so I'm not really sure if the 12 scene modes that come built in are any good. This camera also suffers from really bad red eye problems. I've read it is because the flash is mounted so close to the aperture and this is a problem of any camera designed this way. I suppose it comes along with the compact size, which is well worth it. If you have good photo editing software, you can deal with red eye in most cases. I would recommed that you buy a bigger flash card than what comes with the unit. I went with a 250 megabite card, and I would have a hard time filling up a card of this size. You can take several hundred pictures at the highest settings. I like the rechargable battery that comes with this camera, but you have to conserve your shots and performance starts to suffer as the battery drains. So, I plan on buying an extra battery since I would hate to run out of juice at a crucial moment. So, if you're looking for a good point and shoot digital camera, I think you'll like this one, but you have to understand its limitations.

1) The Anti-Shake AE is something new for us, as the DSC-W5 didn't have it. Actually, we would get blurry pictures all the time in low-light situations with the DSC-W5 (which did not have Anti-Shake AE), and the new Nikon L18 does not seem to have as much trouble as the old camera did. Low light pictures seem to come out great.
2) This camera removed red-eye in the camera AUTOMATICALLY. You don't know how much of a time saver this is!My old DSC-W5 took crappy pictures when we turned on the red-eye protection, and the L18's pictures are MUCH better with the anti red-eye.
3) This camera does a better job of focusing on people than my old DSC-W5 did. It was pretty impressive to see multiple focal points on the easy-shoot mode. The focus was spot-on.
4) The colors are bright and vibrant. Much more so than my old DSC-W5.
5) The screen on this camera is HUGE. We love the sharpness and brightness on it.
6) It supports the new SD-HC cards. That means we can put the new 4GB and 8GB cards in it, and aren't limited to just the 2GB ones.
7) The Video capture (640x480 VGA) takes great, sharp AVI video captures. Great for those times where you don't have your camcorder available.
8) There is some limited internal memory in case your memory card gets full!
9) You can have any picture come up on the startup screen. So we took a picture of our name and phone number, put it in the internal memory, and set it as the start up picture. That way, any honest person that finds our camera has the info to return it.
All in all, this is no SLR or any other high end camera, but it does well what we need it to do - capture our four children and the wonderful moments in their lives.

(More customer reviews)This camera is stylish, thin enough to be comfortable to carry in a pocket for entire day, has a large screen, but the performance is overall disappointing.
Battery life was hardly 100 pictures.
Focusing and taking a picture is very slow...usually more than 4 seconds when it has to use the focus assist light indoors. Everyone comments on that when I'm taking their picture. In addition, unlike most cameras that have multiple focus points (7,9,11,etc), this camera only focuses on the middle point of the picture by default. There is a nice feature that lets you manually move the focus point around to anywhere in the scene, but it takes a lot clicks and time so I don't bother using it.
The lens is not wide enough for daily use and most pictures come out very soft in the center with bad chromatic aberration and a lot of distortion at wide angle.
WIFI is slow and useless in all but the most rarest of situations. They should have just used Bluetooth so that anyone could use their phone to email the picture or at least be able to email/ftp directly to any email/ftp you want.
The screen smudges very quickly, but it's easy to clean and can't see the dirt when the back light is on.
The camera decides when the electronic VR (image stabilization) gets used and most of the time doesn't activate it. And even when it does activate it, it just increases the noise and the picture still comes out soft. There is an option to clean up the image after it's been taken, but the camera tells you that it's not able to do it for many images.
The camera corrupted my Sandisk ultra II sdcard, something that my former compact digicam didn't do in two years.
The movie mode, on the other hand is very good. The movie files do get fairly large...about 1mb per second, but very smooth, very stable and have good color. There is a constant buzzing noise in movies though.
The scroll wheel is fantastic and should have been incorporated into many other cameras. It makes browsing pictures and menus extremely fast and easy. It really saves thumb fatique. The camera is quite fast at switching between pictures, modes, etc. So that...(plus the movie and style factor) are the ONLY redeeming features.
It's also very hard to get used to not having an actual switch to switch between movie and picture mode. Having to go trough though the menu can sometimes make you miss a photo opportunity because the camera is set in video mode and switching to photo is not a one button operation.
Overall, I don't think it's worth the price.What am I getting to replace this one?.....the Canon SD800.

However, Nikon should have included this with the camera instead of giving a power cord so that the camera has to recharge the battery! All my other cameras have had a separate charger. With all of our ability to read memory cards built into the computers now, there is no need to use a power cord for a camera at all any more. The other concern with this charger, even though I believe we need it, is that it has a long cord to plug into the wall and carry around instead of a module that plugs in with the battery attached. We buy cameras like this for their size so why add a bulky charger and cord to have to lug around? Thankfully though at least this seperate charger is available even though it shouldn't need to be....

The camera itself is a solid performer for a point and shoot with a slightly better than average 5x zoom which is great for a point & shoot model. Of course, the projector is the "WOW!" factor. No more squeezing around the display on the back to show your friends the photos. The projector is a great way to share your images. The image quality is not as high as the LCD display, but fine for quick showings.
As an artist, I will use this camera to shoot new subjects, then project them onto a canvas so I can transfer the compositions into a painting.
Be sure to order the larger Nikon case since the other "S" cases are too small for this model.

I wanted to buy a camera that can work in an easy to use automatic mode for point & click situations like parties, casual travel; and also provides manual mode for experimenting & control. My choice was mainly between Coolpix 2500, Coolpix 995 & Canon Elph Series. I just fell for the cool styling of 2500 and the ability to carry it in my shirt pocket.
I just took it out to Australia for a week long trip. It has performed well under different lighting conditions. All I needed to do was change the "SCENE".The camera allows me to identify the type of scene I am going to photograph. It has a bunch of "SCENE" that I can select from. Some of them are - Beach, Landscape, Party, Portrait, Night Landscape, Backlight to name a few. I was also able to take night shots of the Opera house & the Harbor Bridge in the "night landscape" mode. They came out pretty well. I was happy to see the result in about 2 seconds - the duration of the exposure. Pictures taken in bright daylight like that on a beach also came of well. What disappointed was the photgraphs that I took at a night Bar-be-Q party. In most photographs, the people close to the camera looked bright and those away by more than 7-8 feet away from the camera looked dark. Another "scene" that I found useful was "Close Up". I wanted to note down a recepie from a local magazine. Instead of taking notes I just photographed the page in the "Close Up" mode. Now, I do not have to write them down ! I just read the recepie off the picture stored on my computer. It is not much of a "Manual" camera. So if you want to control everything, I recommend look else where.
I found the controls easy to use. There are a bunch of on-screen menu items, buttons & knobs. They are well layed out and are intitutive to use. Let me add - I am a techie. I can handle complexity. I had my first picture in about 10 minutes opening the box and charging the batteries. It took me about 1 hour to understand all the controls & install the software.
You got to buy a memory card unless you intend to save your pictures in a very basic picture format (like 640 X??). I bought a 128 MB card. It stores about 140 pictures in best quality mode (called "FINE"). The camera can be put on a tripod. That is a big plus for night photography. It is very easy to put my fingers on the lens. So I have to worry about it all the time, specially while opening or closing the lens. A price for this cool design!
In a nutshell I find Nikon Coolpix 2500 a fun, easy to use camera for easy going photography.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this camera as an all-around point-and-shoot for my family's use, and plan to return it and pick another - probably a Canon SD850 or similar.
First, the good. Photos are very good overall, with the exceptions noted below, and much better than my previous camera, a Nikon 4300. The camera is small, nice looking, and has a huge LCD. I also appreciated the integrated (and internal) lens cover and non-protruding optical zoom. The image stabilization was another selling point for me.
Then I got the camera home... The slick look is slick (as in slippery) to hold, too. The tiny buttons are not well differentiated, and like other reviewers I found myself accidentally hitting the power switch frequently. The big LCD always looks grainy, making me think my photos weren't very good until I viewed them on my PC monitor. I also found the interface confusing (and I'm no electronics newbie).
But the real killer is the camera's speed. Although it snaps open and lights up extremely quickly, it refuses to take a photo for about two seconds. Press the shutter button again, and you're waiting 1 or 2 more seconds while it focuses and processes - by then the kids have turned away and are on to something else. In short, it's just unbearably slow in everyday use.
Back in the box, then.
UPDATE: I returned this camera and purchased a Canon SD850 IS as a replacement. I am much happier - the Canon is SUPER quick so I no longer get photos of the backs of the kids heads, their ears and hair, or the background when I was setting up the shot... Other quirks with the Nikon that I noticed in a week of use: The battery/card door is VERY hard to open and feels flimsy; the charger requires a big bulky power cord; the slim design fit very nicely in a pocket.

Customer service rep had no conclusive answer at this point.All on line vendors with links on the nikon site had neither the WC-e75a or the ur-e22 proprietary plastic 51mm adapter tube (which is not a sure fit to the body. there is play between body & Tube) The bower steel adapter is much better quality but is 58mm & will not attach to lens but works for the cokin system. After 2 months of searching the net i found both the wc-e75e & Ur-e22. Lens through calumet & the tube through henry's camera video digital out of ontario. The lens is high quality But the tube that has to be dedicated because of the 51mm thread size is a POS. You would think that with the reputation nikon has maintained since the korean war they would make this a one piece unit. The Coolpix p7000 camera in itself is a fine unit. But the tube lens combo should not be purchased as a workhorse.

(More customer reviews)I was initially hesitant to buy this camera since there were ZERO reviews to be found, either here at Amazon, or elsewhere on the internet. But, since I've owned two previous Nikon Coolpix cameras (an old 4 MP camera, and a really old 2 MP camera) and both were great, I wasn't too worried. And I was right to buy it: it is working great and taking great photos, after several days of playing around with it.
First of all, it is very user-friendly. The menus and controls are completely intuitive, and make sense even if you have not cracked open the manual. ("cracked open" being a bit of a misnomer, since the manual is electronic only; the paper manual that comes with it is just a "quick start guide")
Second of all, it is a gorgeous piece of machinery; cute and cuddly and shiny and impressive. I'm afraid my girlfriend is going to try to steal it, it is so cute. I may have to buy her one to preemptively stop that from happening.
But, most of all, it takes great pictures. I walked all over town the first day, putting it through its paces, and scrutinized the photos on my computer when I got back home. If I was going to have to return it, I wanted to do so quickly, but I don't need to. The photos are great.
It is a point-and-shoot, which means that you don't have direct control over shutter speed, aperture, etc. But, you do have a dozen or so "scene modes" including Beach, Museum, Sunset, Panorama, Action, etc. These are very handy. I haven't tried them all yet, but they seem to be well designed.
The second day, I put the camera through its paces inside the house. No problems; it takes great indoor shots, providing excellent exposures both with natural light and with the flash. The wide-angle 4.9 mm lens (equivalent angle of view to a 27 mm lens in a 35mm format camera) was especially nice: you can stand in a corner of a room, and get the entire room into the photo! Nothing left out. That is pretty unusual in an inexpensive fixed-lens camera.
My third day test was to take the camera to the beach on a bright, contrasty day. It performed admirably, maintaining both shadow and highlight details, and rendering the deep blues of the sky and water, as well as the bright sand, equally well. This one's a keeper, folks!
Another nice plus: there is a "16x9" mode available in the "shooting mode" options. This doesn't quite use all 4000x3000 pixels; it only uses 3968x2232 of them. But the images are perfect "HD" format, and completely fill up a typical wide-screen monitor without any stretching. Somehow, they look all the more impressive on a computer screen than the typical 4x3 ratio.
Final tidbit: I bought the camera from Amazon, which was $10 cheaper than the local big-box store, had no sales tax, AND allowed me a 30 day return period with no restocking fee (which would have been 14 days AND a restocking fee at the local store; they need to get a clue).
Anyway, as an overall impression, five stars easily for the Nikon Coolpix S3000........JC

(More customer reviews)Nikon's two newest 3" LCD entries have a tough act to follow, the very popular S7c. The first of these two is the S50. Nice sized camera that easily fits a pocket or purse. But here's what really makes it stand out:
1) Good quality 3x optical periscoping lens with true VR. The periscoping feature means the lens zooms inside the camera body, not outside. This protects the lens from damage if dropped or accidently turned on while in a case (or restricted area like a purse or pocket). The VR is of the optical shift variety, which is far superior to the "anti-blur" modes that simply boost the ISO. But this camera can also go to ISO 1600, getting the best of both worlds;
2) Large 3 inch screen you can see reasonably well at poor angels (such as when holding the camera at low angles or above your head), and better than average outside (at least well enough to take your photographs);
3) Reasonably prices accessories. Nikon reasonable? Yes. Nikon is very reasonable on additional batteries and replacement items. Additionally, they use the SD memory cards, the easiest to find and the most price competitive out there;
4) Great in camera editing. No, it's not a PC-in-a-camera, but it does allow the best in camera editing of any point-and-shoot digital. The D-Lighting is particularly good as saving photos where the important areas are too dark without washing out the light areas.
I also prefer the black finish of the S50 to the silver finish of the S50c. The latter camera features a wireless capability that will not be useful to most, for about $50 more.

(More customer reviews)I got an earlier version of this camera, the S550, to take to England to see crop circles. I have a Nikon D70 which I used to take, but that was a lot of weight in my luggage and hiking around the fields of Wiltshire county.
10 megapixels is almost twice the resolution of the D70 (I now have a D90) so I still came home with great photos! I also discovered that I could shoot video of the crop circle I was in by mounting the camera on the end of my walking stick, starting the camera shooting video and raising it up over my head, and once I perfected my aim, I was able to get a video panorama of the formation from about 12' up - awesome!
Anyway, good small camera, Nikon quality, high resolution, good price - is that enough for you?
BTW, I moved up to the S560 because it now has a micro-USB connector, so you don't have to use the clunky connector that came with the S550. Oh, and image stabilization, which I never pay attention to but probably helps.

(More customer reviews)I have been looking for a compact all around point and shoot camera for awhile now. I have used multiple cameras in the last few months, and I think I have found my favorite. I'm not an expert in terms of color reproduction, or other details aspects of the final photo, but I don't see much to complain about in terms of photo quality.
PROS:
Ultra fast focus. This baby can focus and lock on in < 1 sec. This ensure that you'll be able to capture those timeless moments in a blink of an eye.
Fast startup. The startup of 0.7s is true, BUT only if you are in Auto Mode and Single Shot mode with AF/Center Focus. If you are in another mode or continuous/BSS, face detect, the camera takes almost 5 seconds before you can take your first show. Although I'm a little bit disapointed that the startup of the camera is limited to a very specific mode, I use Auto/Single/AF 99% of the time so I'm not too concerned.
Easy, intuitive controls. I didn't have to read the manual, and I can get around easily.'
High ISO modes, up to 6400. Although I would not recommend anything greater than 800 (or even 400 if you can help it), just have a capability just in case is nice.
Fast 5x wide angle lens. This lens has a pretty standard wide angle lens, 28mm, but the nice thing is that is also a fast lens - maximum aperture of 2.7. Helps a bit in low light. 5x is more than what basic P&S have (usually 3x).
Extremely compact and solid. Its pretty small, but still has a good feel in your hand. Easily slips into your pocket. CONS
Picture quality is just SO-SO. There hasn't been many compact 12mp P&S that excel in picture quality. While its not terrible, its not something to be excited about. Its comparable to any of the SD800-SD960, SD1200 cameras.
ISO800 is barely usable, and anything above that I don't recommend. Of course, I've been spoiled by DSLRs, but I was hoping for better.
Battery drains pretty quickly. I don't get the 200+ shots that Nikon says I can get. I get maybe 100? Of course, I use flash sometimes, I replay the photo's quite a bit, turn it on/off a lot. Maybe that 270 shots per battery is 270 continuous shots? I don't know. Get a second one in my opinion.
This camera takes a while to write to the SD flash card. On my previous Canon SD800 and Panasonic ZR1, I was able to take a picture, and flip it to the playback mode instantly. Now, it takes about 1.5 seconds to write to the card, before I can enable the playback mode. Slightly annoying.So, who is this camera for? Its for the amateur photographer who needs a fast, compact, basic Point and Shoot that will get the job done. I would recommend this over the Canon SD1200, SD800-SD960. But, because of the wide angle and fast shooting capability, you will be able to take quick shots which usually lead to more keeper photo's.

(More customer reviews)I recently sold my Nikon Coolpix 8700, and was looking for a new camera that gave me picture quality equal to or better, and was a much smaller camera. I like taking pictures, but I'm not a photo guy. I basically want to aim, press the button and let the magic happen. Taking a chance I decided to try this camera, and I wasn't disappointed.
It's got a lot of options to go beyond just auto mode if I want to dive into that. My main thing was the picture quality though and the quality of photos is excellent. My wife has a Canon A700 that takes decent pictures so we did a comparison just using the auto settings. A picture of our dog in the house with all the lights off in one room, a picture with one light on, and a picture with all the lights on. I figure if the low light pictures are good, then I'll be pretty happy with the daytime pictures.
While both cameras did a good job, our preference was the Nikon's photos. The colors were closer to what we expected they should look like, and to our eyes appeared more natural. There wasn't any noticeable noise in the photos, and the quality is very, very good.
The size of the camera is great. Shorter than my Blackjack cell phone, and about 2.5 times as thick. Definitely a camera that I could carry in the pocket of my jeans, or a jacket and not feel weighed down.

This is based on about 2 weeks of use, indoor and outdoor, including an indoor speaker event, a large outdoor rally on the mall in Washington DC, a party, a hike in a park during autumn, and various other activities. The camera is physically well-designed and manufactured with quality materials & construction.
Biggest Issue: picture quality is hit-or-miss, mostly miss. Quality for both color and sharpness was occasionally excellent, and typically like a cell-phone camera. There are over a dozen interesting settings, such as sports and landscape modes, and they didn't help enough to solve the picture quality & consistency issue.Other Cons:
most of the controls are on-screen, and these are not always fast to operate (such as zoom in & out, and changing photo settings)
menu system is not as helpful or intuitive as it could be, so sometimes it was easier to turn off and on instead of navigating.
the camera has internal memory that always came up first when reviewing photos... had to click through several menu options to view today's photos by date just to see the most recent photo taken. And everyone wants to see how they look in the photo you just took, so it wasted a lot of time.
video is HD but grainy at times
auto-focus seemed slow to kick in at times (this may be setting-dependent)
time stamp on video files was different by several hours and minutes from the time stamp for photos (on Win 7 PC). Pros:
Pinch-and-zoom touchscreen works nicely
the optical zoom is all inside the camera, and will stay clean... and worked well.
when it took nice photos, the 10+ megapixels were nice to have for printing, cropping, etc.
small and slim
has some internal memory
boots up fast enoughOverall the camera works okay for taking photos & video, but appears to almost be defective in execution. Given the price (upper 200's) it is not going to be kept (even if I have to eat the cost of returning it plus Amazon's fee of apparently 15% for opened items.) The two flap magnets are a little weak - but work. The sides are open down a half an inch so you can pinch the camera for removal. If the camera fell out of your lap in the car it would probably be protected. It would be questionable on higher heights. It's nice looking and does an adequate job.

By the fifth time, after one snap shot, the camera started to show the low battery symbol and it took a while for the camera to re-charge and re-shoot again. The result was many lost opportunities to take any good pictures. I just junked it, and bought a pair of Panasonic NiMH rechargeables and worked perfectly since.

(More customer reviews)I found the last generation of coolpix cameras to be disappointing at best. This one however has received some massive improvements.
1. It's very very fast
It is speedy in all ways possible. The shutter response time in almost instantaneous. As soon as you click the button the photo takes... give 1 additional second in poor lighting at worst. Best of all is the photo navigation. Remember those old coolpix commercials where Ashton Kutcher would flick his finger and all the photos would scroll by fast? That never worked before, but it actually does on this one. There is no lag whatsoever on photo viewing or changing settings.
2. Excellent photo quality
I was playing with this in best buy and it took very noticeably clearer photos than the other camera in the same price range... including the Canon powershots. Its actually what made me decide to buy one before I learned all the other good stuff.
3. Functionality
It doesn't allow manual exposure and aperture controls because of its size. However they give you a ton of different scene modes to play around with. Some are a little too niche to matter, but all the main ones are there. Also you can do lots of adjustments to a photo that has already been taken. These are made even easier by using the little included stylus which hangs off your camera strap. The camera has a very good feature which allows you to choose the focus of your picture simply by tapping it on the screen. Finally a purpose to using a touch screen besides flashiness.
4. Looks
Its slim and the screen is large and clear. It's very minimalistic with only 2 buttons on the back. The camera looks very traditional and minimalistic, like most of the coolpix range. It doesn't look or feel cheap by all means, but you're not gonna turn heads when you use it... unless of course you're caught scrolling your library (which does feel pretty cool).
The Bad Parts
This camera only has a couple of negative issues. First off, the lens does not retract into the body when you're viewing photos. It means you can switch to shooting really fast, but it also burdens the way in which you can hold your camera. I would have liked to have been able to hold it flat in my palm while looking at my photos. Another problem is that it doesn't use a battery charger, it charges with a usb cable that plugs directly into the camera. It comes with an AC power adapter that you can plug the cable into if you want... kind of like what an ipod uses. I guess it makes everything simpler and you can carry less stuff when you travel, but I like to charge extra batteries while I'm using my camera.
The touchscreen has a slightly matte surface. Which means it gets very dirty very fast. I put a surface shield on this immediately and it has eliminated that problem completely... but it also makes the touch controls slightly less responsive. If you do this, you can still control the camera well with your finger, but it's faster and easier to navigate photos with the stylus.
I HIGHLY recommend this camera to anyone needing a good point and shoot, especially if speed is important to you.

(More customer reviews)I purchased the Nikon 9000ED scanner mostly because I could not find anything else that would scann my 2.75 x 2.75 slides. There may be other products out there but the recommendations I got was to go with the Nikon. Basically I inherited a case of these slides which feature my family from roughly 1960 to 1979. Most of the slides are badly faded, underexposed or otherwise not usable. So I figured in order to save the memories I need to spend the money to do it right.
I am not disappointed. Initially I kept getting a mysterious error in the post-processing cycle. After many emails back in forth with 3rd level support staff at Nikon (nice to be able to get support) we figured out that I was setting something called digital GEM on when that wasn't necessary. The process works on badly grained film which I didn't have. Once I changed the default scan settings by not asking for GEM corrections, all has gone beautiful for me.
The red-brown slides magically come back to me with their original colors via the digital ROC process. I'm not too technical on all the things that happen within the hardware-software process but the results an amateur like me can get are simply awsome. I scan the slides at a full 4000 bpi and store the results as huge TIFF files. I figure that disk space is cheap but at least I have the original in a best possible digitized format. The slides will continue to deteriorate but not the digiatl data.

Star-up is quite fast, the camera is ready to shoot at just 2 seconds.
The lag between shot and shot is slow, u have to wait no less than 3.5 seconds before taking the next shot.
The Nikon S5 is made of metal, the look is really good very stilish and pocketable (super slim).
IMHO a huge limitation on the S5 is the lack of manual controls to set the aperture and the shutter speed. Also the built-in flash is quite weak

This is a digital camera to take pictures without worrying about the technical aspects of photography. You have plenty of scenes modes that will automatic adjust the appropriate settings for the picture, so it is an automatic digital camera, there are a few settings that you can adjust manually but those ones aren't the key ones of professional photography.
Almost every Nikon's camera I used have great quality, this one is a better and more interesting model because it is from a new generation of Nikon's digital cameras, so on the Nikon's learning curve, this one of the latest state of the art consumer digital camera (September 2005).
So I give you a few tips in order to help you on the decision of buying this product:
1.Great photo quality, read the entire manual before and after you first shoots (Don't complaint about quality if you fail to do so). Get a tripod if you can.
2.It is automatic, great for a person that only wants to get decent, great pictures and from time to time take wonderful ones without being experts on the technical world of photography; I if you find yourself falling in love with photography, take some curses and then buy a pro or an almost professional camera.
3. Great photo quality! Nikon has it! The best way to notice this fact it is looking at the "view shared images from other users" on the models and brands you want to choose from. Let your eyes make the decision.
4.Visit web sites where you can find information about megapixels, autofocus, composing pictures with autofocus, multi area focus, memory cards, and rechargeable batteries. You will find this information helpful on the future and on your buying decision.
5.L1 has a 5x zoom lenses, a close up from 1.6 inches. This optical combo is hard to find on the market. 6.2 Megapixels, excellent definition.
Cons:
1.Multi Area Focus, great new feature on L1. Bad explain it on the manual. I recommend you get the default setting to Auto Focus Center and then take a tour on the internet in order to fully understand what Multi Are Focus is and how you can take advantage of this feature.
2.Be aware on buying mini tripods, this digital camera has the tripod adapter on the left side of it, making the camera not well weighted; try mini tripods before buying one. You won't have problems with normal tripods.
I used other brands, I keep Nikon. I hope your had find this review helpful for you.

(More customer reviews)I have been a dedicated Nikon 35mm fan for years, but this is my first Nikon digital camera. I did debate very long between the SLR series and the Coolpix line, but in the end, the compact design and the lighter weight of the Coolpix nudged me in that direction. So far, I am not disappointed.
The menu structure is different from the Olympus menu system I had become used to, but a short session with the Nikon owner's manual quickly showed me how to access all the functions. Perhaps it is because I had used another band of digital camera for the last few years, I did not originally find the Nikon menu quite as intuitive. I had no trouble changing over however, after less than an hour or so.
The Coolpix is clearly designed as a point and shoot digital camera. Personally, I favor more of a wide angle style than what this camera delivers, but the zoom range is quite nice and very useable. Automatic modes are the default for everything. In my initial testing, I found very few photos that were not acceptable using the fully auto everything. Excellent optics and a vibration compensation system yielded very crisp hand held images. Good marks for this area.
While there is no full manual operation for the S630, there are shooting modes galore that will provide settings to isolate the subject from the background using larger apertures (portrait modes) or favor smaller apertures for greater depth of field when photographing scenic views. There is even an extreme close up mode, similar to the macro mode of many 35mm cameras. Other overrides will allow you to modify the flash effects (fill in, red eye reduction, off and others), fire bursts of shots (depending on exposure up to several per second), set automatic intervals (pre-determined) or even some in camera creative effects. While it did take some getting used to the controls, the S630 again took high marks in this area.
One of the features I really like about the Coolpix S series in general is the large, compared to my older digital camera, viewing screen. I was even more pleased to find I could superimpose a small grid as an aid in composition. I was trained on a 4x5 view camera and had a grid screen for my old Nikon F2S, so this was like coming home for me. I would have liked some intermediate lines in addition to the three by three box pattern, but even this simple implementation will prove useful.
The S630 uses an exclusive rechargeable battery. I suggest buying at least one spare battery with your camera. While the battery is rated at well over 200 exposures before needing to be recharged, I'm sure Mr. Murphy will be at the party you are photographing and your battery will die, just as you are about to snap that great celebrity photo you dreamed about taking. The S630 makes the external charger as part of your purchase package and an AC cord is an option. If you like being able to run on standard batteries, this may be less than desirable for you, but I like the rechargeable feature from an environmental standpoint. Call this an even trade.
I was disappointed in the lack of an uncompressed format to save images in. My last digital camera had a RAW format that while not used for every photograph nonetheless was used often enough I miss not having it. You do have some selection in the JPEG compression, however, so I have to be content with that. Your photos do look their best using the maximum pixel count, so you will want a high capacity card. I urge you to get at least a 4 GB card to supplement the minimal onboard memory.
Now we come to my only real dissatisfaction with the S630, and that has little to do with the camera itself. I hate the software suite Nikon supplies. I must digress a moment here. If you use a high capacity SD card, one that is 4 GB or more, you may not be able to read the card with the card reader built into your computer. While technically still an SD card, the SDHC series cards use some internal difference to break the 2 GB barrier. Whatever the reason, you should purchase an external reader capable of handling the SDHC format cards.
Without an external card reader, you need to plug the camera into your computer and use the Nikon Transfer software to transfer the images to your computer. While the plug fitting on the camera looks like a mini-USB, I could not get a mini-USB cable I already owned to fit the socket. I needed to use the Nikon supplied cable. My computer would not recognize the camera until I loaded the software. The transfer process is slow and the interface is clunky at best. I also have my own photo retouching software and do not need the software Nikon supplies. With an external card reader, the process is greatly simplified: remove the SD card, pop it in the reader and transfer the images just like any other file collection. An external reader will also provide a faster transfer speed.
All together, I found the S630 a very nice travel package. This camera will deliver some very high quality images without the bulk of an SLR. You can easily fit a spare battery, spare memory cards and the camera into a small case not even the size of a case for sunglasses. Well worth the price until you really need the versatility of a digital SLR.

Recently returned from 10 day trip to Japan. The camera performed flawlessly and delivered photos even better than I expected. Great available light shots, very good flash fill in, good video in karaoke bar and wonderful overall grab shots. My only complaint is I wish it had a wider wide angle, but I knew this going into the trip. Used the telephoto at maximum to capture details at the top of castles, shrines and temples; great results there made up for the lack of a wider view.

(More customer reviews)I recently sold my Nikon Coolpix 8700, and was looking for a new camera that gave me picture quality equal to or better, and was a much smaller camera. I like taking pictures, but I'm not a photo guy. I basically want to aim, press the button and let the magic happen. Taking a chance I decided to try this camera, and I wasn't disappointed.
It's got a lot of options to go beyond just auto mode if I want to dive into that. My main thing was the picture quality though and the quality of photos is excellent. My wife has a Canon A700 that takes decent pictures so we did a comparison just using the auto settings. A picture of our dog in the house with all the lights off in one room, a picture with one light on, and a picture with all the lights on. I figure if the low light pictures are good, then I'll be pretty happy with the daytime pictures.
While both cameras did a good job, our preference was the Nikon's photos. The colors were closer to what we expected they should look like, and to our eyes appeared more natural. There wasn't any noticeable noise in the photos, and the quality is very, very good.
The size of the camera is great. Shorter than my Blackjack cell phone, and about 2.5 times as thick. Definitely a camera that I could carry in the pocket of my jeans, or a jacket and not feel weighed down.

This is based on about 2 weeks of use, indoor and outdoor, including an indoor speaker event, a large outdoor rally on the mall in Washington DC, a party, a hike in a park during autumn, and various other activities. The camera is physically well-designed and manufactured with quality materials & construction.
Biggest Issue: picture quality is hit-or-miss, mostly miss. Quality for both color and sharpness was occasionally excellent, and typically like a cell-phone camera. There are over a dozen interesting settings, such as sports and landscape modes, and they didn't help enough to solve the picture quality & consistency issue.Other Cons:
most of the controls are on-screen, and these are not always fast to operate (such as zoom in & out, and changing photo settings)
menu system is not as helpful or intuitive as it could be, so sometimes it was easier to turn off and on instead of navigating.
the camera has internal memory that always came up first when reviewing photos... had to click through several menu options to view today's photos by date just to see the most recent photo taken. And everyone wants to see how they look in the photo you just took, so it wasted a lot of time.
video is HD but grainy at times
auto-focus seemed slow to kick in at times (this may be setting-dependent)
time stamp on video files was different by several hours and minutes from the time stamp for photos (on Win 7 PC). Pros:

the optical zoom is all inside the camera, and will stay clean... and worked well.

I wanted a better way than holding the flash, so I purchased this bracket, and it works beautifully for supplemental front lighting that is triggered wirelessly by the on-camera flash. My camera does not have a port for the included wire. My manual for my flash specifically mentioned this as compatible, even though neither the camera nor bracket listed the L100.
You may have to unscrew bracket to access batteries or SD card from camera. Can be mounted either left or right side of camera, and is well made for years of use. Certain angles may not pickup your camera's flash and will not trigger flash, so it works best positioned forward of camera.

The Nikon Coolpix S52 9MP Digital Camera (Midnight Black)is a great all-around point and shoot camera. The performance is impressive and the value is best in class. Canon seems to get all the attention in this space, but I like the Coolpix family of cameras best out of point and shoot models in this price range. For $200, you get a great camera with quality pictures and an awesome interface.
The screen on this camera is Truly AWESOME, 3 inches of clear and durable optical lens quality glass. This camera has the nicest screen out of a point and shoot out there. I mean it is BIG. If you're anal like me, you'll want to get a screen protector. But careful handling of my S50 has proven to me that the glass is very durable and not easily scratched.
Functions And Features
There are some interesting functions, included red-eye correction and image cropping. Once again, most people will be loading their pics on their computers and then dealing with those edits. Still, it's nice to be able to do them.
The control wheel lets you scroll through your photos when displaying them on the screen for review. It only takes one button to delete a picture. It's also easy to access all the menu functions. Switching between camera mode and video recorder mode is just as easy, and reviewing your pictures via play mode is accomplished with one button as well.
The zoom on this camera is internal as with all S50 and S51 models. That means no waiting for the lense to zoom in and out, and no worries about the mechanical issues with those external lens extension cameras. This is a huge plus for this camera, and helps to maintain the slim profile. It also makes this camera MUCH thinner than some of those super-slim ones when they are turned on and the lenses are sticking out.
There are thinner cameras, but none of them are as affordable and as packed with features as this one.
Picture taking is good, and if you get a faster memory card it will be faster. The Auto settings are good enough for most basic uses. But low light and nighttime situations just don't perform as well with auto. So the short answer is, if you have to shoot in low light, set the ISO manually! There's also a "High ISO" option that seems to work ok, but setting it to 1600 seemed to speed up my shooting time.
For those that want increased digital zoom, I would caution you that that feature is usually a gimmick. The 3X optical zoom is more than enough for point and shoot use and yields clear pictures even at full zoom. Digital zoom just uses software to zoom in to the already captured image, but technically it doesn't zoom at all. So with that in mind, I can live with 3X optical zoom. Always compare cameras to each other with the optical zoom in mind.
This unit also comes in other colors such as green and red. If you must have the newer wireless features, you are going to want to get the Nikon Coolpix S52c 9MP Digital Camera Zoom with Wi-Fi (Vibrant Black), which has a wireless network card inside it and can upload pictures without hooking up to your computer. I've gotten to test this wireless model and it does perform well, but in general I don't think this feature is a critical one for me and I would still choose this basic model.
This is an update to the S50 and S51 versions and adds more megapixels (9M!) so that you can produce prints up to 16X20. Just keep in mind, almost nobody buying this camera is trying to produce prints that large! But more megapixels never hurt anybody. :)
The video recording features are pretty much the same as the S50 and S51 models. The video quality is great, but obviously you have to be somewhat forgiving on the sound quality. The quality of your recordings absolutely depend on your memory card quality and speed. And rest assured, this card is SDHC compatible so choose a nice class 6 card till a faster class hits the consumer market. And also keep in mind that your computer probably isn't SDHC compliant (unless it's very new) so get a set with and SDHC reader included or transfer pics from your camera and not from the card.
Comparing The S52 To The Competition
The body of the camera is nice and thin. When you consider that the lens is internal and does not protrude, this guy is thinner than almost everything out there, including the Casio Exislim.
When choosing between this camera and other options, you need to be aware of a few points. The Sony Cybershot T300 10.1MP Digital Camera with 5x Optical Zoom (Black) is a nice camera that also performs well and perhaps has a better responding auto-detection mode for low light situations. But I tested the S52 by setting the ISO manually to 1600. The results were somewhat surprising and produced better quality pictures in low light than Sony's auto setting. Obviously you can also manually set the T300's ISO, but the differences are negligible at that point.
Other things to consider is that you must use Sony's proprietary Memory Pro / Duo, which is more expensive with fewer speed options available. The T300 has a thin body, but the sliding lens cover adds considerable thickness and I personally find it annoying. In addition, the T300 is much more expensive and not even close to the S52 in terms of value.
The Nikon Coolpix S600 10MP Digital Camera with 4x Wide Angle Optical Zoom (Slate Black) has a widescreen capability that may appeal to some and 1 megapixel more for a total of 10. When you add in the greater zoom magnification, that camera is a great option for many people. Just keep in mind that the S600 does have an externally articulating lens, so it's much less compact than the S52 when actually in use. I am just too hooked on this internal lens to use the S600 often.
The only real cons you should be aware of is that your battery will need to be recharged after a few full days of use. That is pretty normal, but it did annoy me at first that I didn't have a spare battery. So get yourself a spare battery and keep it charged. Probably good advice for any camera. The other con is that you have to buy a little case for this camera, which seems like something that should be included.
Review your options with a mind towards the kind of shooting you need to do. Bottom line, get yourself this camera if you want to have a nice camera for everyday general use. This camera is durable, easy to use and loaded with features.

(More customer reviews)I received this camera as a gift that was puchased at Target on Black Friday. I just received it for my birthday. I read reviews on another site prior to using it. They suggested changing the settings put the ISO to 200 (instead of Auto) and Distortion Control ON. Numerous reviews on that site also complained that the pictures seemed grainy on the screen but when in review mode or printed are great. I followed the reviews of others made the changes and waited until I printed some pictures they are perfect, they have turned out wonderfully. For those that haven't returned the camera make these changes hopefully it will help. I am thrilled with mine.

(More customer reviews)This is a very versatile camera and responsive to most needs. It has a good macro range to go along with a super zoom range. It compares well to a Panasonic DMC-GH1 which has a much larger sensor and more expensive optics (the lens alone is twice the price of this Nikon). The Panasonic also produced higher saturation and contrast shots in default mode and this gives the appearance of higher resolution. The Nikon gave a truer auto outdoor color balance and more natural contrast. Even at ISO 800 it was very sharp. The two highlights that amazed me were the Nikon's focusing indicator system. It is so cool that when you shoot a bouquet of flowers the display shows you each blossom chosen by the matrix focusing system. You click the shutter with the knowledge that it is choosing what you want. Wonderful. The second highlight is the range of the optics from good macro, nice wide angle, and amazing telephoto. Please see the photos I uploaded showing how well this camera compares. What the Nikon lacks mostly comes down to smooth tones and fine detail at high ISOs; and this is only because it is being compared to a large sensor camera. The images would easily pass a fairly critical viewer on an 8x10 print and seem to be better than previous cameras with this size sensor.
Pros (so far):
Great focus indicator system, Display shows small green squares over selected objects for focus = ready to shoot, red square = not ready
Light, easy to hold good fit to my medium sized hands.
Articulated screen seems more natural than the swing out to the side screens (aligned with lens)
Quick access to shoot videos, focus tracking option, slow motion (lower res 240 fps),
Hugh zoom range and quite fast action, 1? ++ second end to end
Outdoor sunlight colors quite natural
Very good resolution lens for this price range and favorably compares to much more expensive lenses (see above photos, several are pieces of 16 x 20 prints)
Very good macro versatility (see blowup of portion of terry towel above)
Adequate viewfinder but very contrasty, necessary info in viewfinder.
Cons (so far):
When shooting a video the focus is not able to keep up with the zoom (I reduced my rating because of this).
No RAW image option (less important with tools like Corel Image Adjustment Lab that gives me color temperature correction on jpg)
Lens cap rather than auto protect system, must remember to take it off before turning on camera (your notified when you forget)
Must use the menu system for several settings (ISO, color balance), slower but OK (hats off to the Canon G11, Panasonic)
Fast zoom over big range means it is tricky to accurately crop a shot (same with others though) Would love to see a 'nudge' feature for small changes.
Color balance with my photo fluorescent lights was tricky to dial in
Quick shutter in most situations but not all
No hot shoe for accessories and external flash
Only an adequate viewfinder
Minimum aperture of f8 (standard for cameras in this class, but would love to see it improved)
Screen does not 'self protect'
Must manually switch viewfinder verses LCD, simple one push button though

This case fits the bill well.
It has a notch on each side that the strap can hang outside the case when it is closed. The case has 3 compartments: one inside and one on each side outside.

Positive notes go to...
Picture quality:
Great. Details are crisp & colors are natural.
Ok pictures are a little overexposed when the flash goes on in a mildly lit environment, but I had this problem with my old-fashioned "analog" camera as well and advanced photographers can use the exposure settings to minimize this.
Features:
Great. This camera has every feature I need. It has a wide variety of settings & option, you can record "animations" (no sound), etc... In addition the user interface is clear & user-friendly.
Design:
Looks ok, handles great. A little bulky but not oversized.
Negative aspects...
Battery:
Battery life is low. This is the main drawback: as you can't switch the TFT view off (no optical viewfinder), batteries die rather quickly. They don't last more than 1-2 days under moderate use. Maybe using rechargeable lithium batteries might help, but I haven't tried it yet. So if you use this while traveling, be sure to bring in 2 sets of 4 rechargeable batteries with you. You'll probably have to change batteries every day. Because of this, you'll have to carry spare batteries everywhere you go... Grrrr...
Software included:
Nikon's software was really lame. My brother's Sony has much better software. I uninstalled everything and now I'm only using XP's built in features.
Overall...
This is a great camera if you don't mind the battery life that might fall a little short. But my brother's Sony doesn't last much longer either. This is maybe a common problem among all digital cameras. But it's worse here because you don't have the alternative to use an optical viewfinder...
Still if you don't want to spend much and if excellent quality pictures are more important than long battery life, give it a try!

(More customer reviews)I was looking for a small portable camera to complement my Nikon D70 and D80 DSLR. Small enough to fit in my pocket or on my belt, light enough to always have with me, yet have advanced capabilities and produce good quality photos when I did not have a DSLR with me.
I have tried many cameras from Nikon and Canon. The P5000 has the right set of features and price to meet my needs. The Canon G7 does have some superior features, but is larger and weighs more so does not fit in my shirt pocket but OK in coat pocket, and is ~$100 more. I have had the P5000 for almost a week and it has been on my belt in the leather case every day. Very travel friendly. I also have the small light SB-400 iTTL Flash in my brief case to add more Flash capability and it is great.
Picture quality is finally what has to be good. The P5000 produces very good IQ with that "Nikon Color" I am used to. I tested the P5000 in good lighting versus my Nikon D80, Nikon S7c and CoolPix 5400. The D80 wins hands down as the best quality. But the P5000 is much better that my other CoolPix. Plus going back and forth from the D80 to the P5000 was smooth due to button placement and similar shooting style. The hand grip on the P5000 is excellent for such a small camera too. I have taken 200 pics and 12 videos in one week. A friendly camera, learning and opinion as follows:-
1.Colors: True and natural. Just captures the real colors. This is the best quality. You capture what you see.
2.Buttons and Functions: Simple, heuristic, no need to do a serious reading of the book.
3.Settings: The options are varied, good. Liked the video capture options very much i.e. for options for computer size image, TV size image and TV* image size. Videos on projection up to 5ftX 4 ft look good. For video presentations, Audio capture: has noise while play back on the camera. The noise is much lower when played on computer or projector. A steady background hiss. Mostly, because microphone faces forward, hence the commentary spoken from behind has poor noise to signal ratio. But it is fine.
4.Still Snaps; Good. A 3 MP size image is about 400 KB. Used for presentations. Lower resolution is also available. At high end, 6 MB it is perfect.
5.Body: Sturdy, compact. Impressive and austere, no unnecessary contours, labels, very somber looking.
6.LCD: 2.5 inch, in bright sun, the image is not visible, this is understandable.
7.No standard optical view finder. The LCD and Camera hibernates very quickly after 15 to 20 secs non use. Great on battery
8.Battery: 2 AAs cells. Great. This means one can use the camera right out of the box, no need to carry charger, no need to buy additional battery lithium for 40 to 50 $, when run out, just pop in fresh two AAs. Rechargeable AAs of 2700 mA are very good indeed. Carry 2 spare in office bag.
9.Video Zoom. All new digital compacts either do not have zoom whilst recording or the zoom jumps in multiples of 1x. This is jumpy. I miss the smooth step-less 4x optical to 4 x digital continuous 16x smooth zoom of my Kodak 4 MP. I tested: mostly all new compacts now have a zoom in video capture that goes boom boom 1x 2x 3x ....Can not fault Nikon for this.
10.What did I want? I wanted a compact traveling, high quality work camera, always in my laptop case, which is also great for the family/home pictures. I got that in Nikon L6.

(More customer reviews)The L2 and L3 models are twins with a shared instruction manual. For some the more expensive L2 may be a better choice.
At a camera store I made several identical shots with both cameras and the L2 produced consistently sharper images when zoomed in on the fine detail of ordinary shots. (Using readability of distant text to judge sharpness of jpg images saved in the largest file size.)
With simpler menus than higher priced cameras these seem to be a good choice for the less determined photographer in your family. I am going to use mine as a backup for an older pocket digital on a trip and ultimately as a spouse's camera. While she likes 4X6 prints, for which the L3 would be fine, I will keep her files and view them on computer and so chose the extra sharpness.
This is a very likeable little camera that is significantly smaller than my older digital. To keep that size advantage I found a Tamrac slip in case with Velcro closure flap at a photo chain store with many cases to choose from.

On a trip the L2's daylight photos and videos were very good and the Best Shot Selector a fine feature, however the weak flash was a serious limitation in many situations. Some dark images were improved by a feature Nikon calls "D-lighting". In dark situations my old digital produced far better images. I would subtract one star if Amazon would let me edit the rating.

And it is incredibly inexpensive for a camera of such value.
Ok, so its 3.6 optical zoom won't pick sand off an eagle's beak at a thousand yards. Okay, so it won't blow up to billboard size without loss of definition. In the real world however and everyday use this is a fine and professional level camera that will do a far better job than you expected. Better than a cell-phone.
Disguised as a point and shoot. That's what makes it very effective; people are not intimidated by it. You can get right up to them, and it looks like any other camera. Yet, it is more.
In fact, the generous three inch LCD screen means you do not have to hold it to your face. There is no optical viewfinder in any case. So you can hold it at your hip and glance down at it to compose, and snap shots while engaging the subject in small talk comfortably. I have done this effectively with Tarahumara Indian children in northern Chihuahua who normally run quickly from any camera. It works, and came out great. And that large LCD screen has a high-contrast, anti-reflection coating which keeps it clear even in strong sunlight.
This camera is an improvement over the earlier, wonderful Coolpix, such as the great 8 megapix Nikon Coolpix L18 8MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom (Ruby Red) mainly because it has ten megapix capability. The earlier accessories such as the AC adapter, the Nikon EH-65A AC Adapter, are transferable if you have a long shoot to do in one place (like a schoolful of children, which I have done) or other reason to go off-battery. Nevertheless, a pair of Energizer? e2? "AA" Lithium Batteries For digital cameras, portable audio players, and more last in here last forever.
Your old Coolpix camera pouch also still fits; use it and protect your investment. I like the Rokinon Compact Digital Camera Padded Carrying Case for Canon Powershot, Casio Exilim, Fuji Finepix, (GE) General Electric, Kodak EasyShare, Nikon Coolpix, Olympus FE Stylus, Panasonic Lumix, Pentax Optio, Sony CyberShot and Samsung Digital Cameras.
Also new here, aside from the greater megapixels, is the new Expeed image processing system specially fine-tuned for the Coolpix series "to render natural-looking pictures of incredible quality and quick response" as if the earlier system of digital processing was not fine enough! Amateur enthusiasts will find their photos reaching a new magnitude of quality; even the professional will leave his camera bag and lenses at home (okay, so she might miss her long lens, but macro here gets in to two inches).
The ISO settings are phenomenal, stretching from 64 ISO all the way out to 1600. Over twenty years ago when I was doing photo-journalism in Nicaragua, we used 64 for our slide film and 1600 was just coming on the horizon, very grainy but with a special charm for low light situations, like oil lamp, etc. Here you can do very low light and candlelight (if you do not mind some grain effect), and in fact there are special pre-sets which employ the faster ISO's effectively.
This is another expansion over the prior Coolpix L series. You can choose instead of Auto (with own its user-selected options) to use the pre-set "Scene" selections quickly and efficiently. The Scene modes now include: Portrait, Night Portrait, Sports, Landscape, Party, Beach/Snow, Sunset, Dusk/Dawn, Night Landscape, Museum, Fireworks Show, Close Up, Copy, Back Light, Panorama Assist, Food. Food is one of the new ones, and you food photo-journalists might want to try it very inexpensively yet quite well here. The rest of the modes you can figure how they are set from the title and how you might apply their settings to similar situations; know that the Nikon impression of party might be much more sedate and candle-lit than the Animal House idea. This is not cheating, to use pre-sets; this is using the tool that you have in the way it was designed. Cheating would be setting this to its auto-scene setting in which it selects the Scene mode according to prevailing conditions, automatically. Yes, this can do it.
The panorama assist is great. You can take a series of photos in a row in either of four directions (left to right, up and down, etc.) overlapping by one third (I really appreciate the rule of thirds grid which you can bring up on the LCD, keeping the camera straight and well composed), and then unite them with the included software into one long (or tall) file. I had reason to do this the other day at a long new school. Things do not build vertical out here in the desert, but there is plenty of room for horizontal, and a special Cinerama style long photo framing. In fact you could line up your whole town along the sidewalk standing and take one long photo of everyone in town. Just find printer and paper!
With the built in macro mode you can jump right into that cactus blossom from two inches away and have perfect focus. Take a photo of that baby's toes and blow them up to 16x20. Come in close to that ant stealing cracker crumbs on your picnic. This strength of macro was recently unimaginable, and yet here you have this power within a humble, tiny and inexpensive package.
What I really love and appreciate is the SDHC compliancy. I can use as standard memory card a regular Sandisk 4GB Secure Digital SD HC Memory Card (SDSDB-4096, BULK, No Reader) and have room for 500 shots at maximum resolution. You can truly, as we used to say a quarter century ago "shoot a roll; keep a shot." Take all of the shots you can, and then pick one out to use and delete the rest. For someone who used to burn through boxes of film (at 36 shots each max) and then do the darkroom processing all night, and then find a free way to get more, this is like living in another, finer dimension. Of course, you can put even larger SD HC memory cards in here and if you ever do fill one up and have nothing more to put in there and no time to delete, this camera comes with a generous 20MB internal memory on hand.
You can hook it up to the USB port of a computer directly and use the included software, or simply pop out the SD card and plug it into a reader and into the computer. Whatever works for you, although I do not like opening and closing the battery/card hatch too much. It is very strong and durable, but in the olden days I had a habit of snapping such things and putting them back together with duct tape. This one looks remarkably resilient nevertheless and has stood up to me.
Speaking of shooting a roll to get the one picture, have you ever taken a shot to discover your subject blinked? This camera lets you know. Yes, this camera sees when your subject blinks, and lets you know, using the Smart Portrait system. It also automatically fixes your red-eye special. You'll never see red eye again. It finds faces, and automatically focuses on them, up to a dozen at a time. It can also snap the shutter automatically when someone finally dares to smile. And the D-lighting will save those details otherwise lost in darkness.
As you can see, this camera does everything for you but serve as photo agency selling your work to Vogue or GQ. A great camera at a small price. What can go wrong?
The most amazing thing for me, of course, an old still shooter, is that this tiny camera is also a video camera, with built in mike, and a built in speaker for playback. You can make movies with this at two different resolutions, either for television playback at 640x480 or laptop at 320x240 (good for e-mailing). These home movies are truly sharp, with the same excellent back to front focus as the photos, and surprisingly high quality sound. The good:
The form factor is great
I like the way you slide the cover to open the lens and turn the camera on. Makes turning on fast and easy.
The touch screen is great. Very easy to change settings. Screen is responsive. You can touch where you want to focus, which is really cool.
The ability to shoot in 16:9 ratio is nice, but you're limited to 8MP in that mode.

The Bad
This camera just wouldn't take a good picture. Outside in daylight I could get a pretty good photo, but anything indoors was poor at best. Even indoors during the day when there's decent light. After taking my first set of shots I assumed I must be doing something wrong, so I read the manual, tried all the different "scenes", I tried adjusting ISO, resolution, etc.
Granted, I'm a fairly novice user, so perhaps a more experienced pro could get a better picture out of this camera. I finally pulled out my old Canon SD200 3.2MP camera that I was looking to replace. I took many photos side by side. I never took the Canon off "auto" mode and I tweaked the Nikon a million ways. Virtually every time the Canon was sharper, and more color accurate.
So, I thouht maybe I got a bad camera. I went to Best Buy and tried their display model. You could see on the camera screen that the images just weren't that great. Maybe if I didn't have a side by side comparison it wouldn't have been so noticable, but I really expected this Nikon to be better than my very old Canon.
If anyone believes it's the operator and not the camera I'm more than open to advice, because I loved everything else about this camera. I did return it, but would buy it again if I found out it was just operator error, however, I really don't think it was my error.

I like vivid colors, and when set to "vivid", the Nikon S570 produces photos with beautiful vivid colors and excellent contrast. The wide angle lens has great edge to edge sharpness. The Nikon S570 performs well, probably not the fastest (shutter lag and start-up time), but good nonetheless. The only thing that it's really slow in is the wait time between shots, which seems to be an eternity. I've missed a few shots waiting for the camera to be ready for the next shot. Otherwise, I really love this camera. It's small and light enough to fit in you pocket, and it takes great pictures. And for it's price, it's definitely a great buy.

(More customer reviews)There are some things that Nikon did right with this camera, but mostly they got it wrong. Although I love my Nikon Coolpix 3100 (3 megapixels), some may want to avoid the Nikon Coolpix L11.
First, the good. It takes great pictures and fits into your pocket. OK for snapshots under normal conditions. I also have had some professional quality pics with good color saturation then the light is good. The camera remembers your settings (eg, exposure compensation) after being turned off, meaning you don't need to reset them each time you power up/down.
Now the bad:
1.As one reviewer noted, it does not have a viewfinder, only an LCD monitor. First, powering the LCD screen makes it eat batteries. Next, the LCD screen is useless in bright light because you can't see what's on the screen.
2.Once the camera alerts you that it's turning off after a certain period of non-use (eg, 60 seconds), it takes a long time to actually turn off. And in the meantime, there's nothing you can do to stop it from turning off. Not good it you want to get that great shot.
3.The cycling time between pics is very long. It takes about 1.5 - 2 seconds to recycle and get ready for the next shot.
4.The "multi-selector" (the large round dial in the back that lets you select flash, timer, exposure, and macro settings) is prone to operator error (meaning it's too small and you will select the wrong setting a lot (eg, exposure instead of timer). This means you need to scroll out of the wrong setting, back into the correct setting. Again, a time waster.
5. It can be very noisy (the pictures look grainy) in night pics.The price isn't bad for 6 megapixles, but I suspect the low price is indicative of how much some people don't like this camera. Still, I think it's a three star.

I wanted a small camera that could take great pictures of children who DO NOT stop for the camera. This camera handles those situations perfectly and the size you cannot beat. I love the long movie time it gives you and the large viewing screen. The modes are easy and the menu is a breeze to navigate with just enough to add features and simple enough to change on the fly without losing precious moments.
The vibration reduction I have used only a couple times, not the best pictures-they come out VERY GRAINY!! I thought I would need it more to take pictures of the kids, I have better luck on the Auto mode or Indoor mode. The delay between pictures is slower than others, but the picture quality is great.
Overall, very happy. Would give it 5 stars but the delay between pictures and the hype of the vibration reduction mode disappoints me. I would buy another again despite these facts and am actually waiting to get some more in the slush fund to buy my husband one so we each have one!!
Very easy, light and user friendly for the beginner to slight advanced photographer!!

These are the reasons I think it's great:
1) It has all the features an amatuer photo-enthusiast would want.
2) It is easy enough for my grandmother to use.
3) It is very compact but the controls are so well designed that they're still easy to use.
4) It has optional lenses like wide angles and extra zooms.
5) For "digital film" it uses Compact Flash cards, which are easy to find, cheap, reliable and supported by many other devices you may have at hoome.
6) The Nikon Coolpix line is a well-established line so you know support and parts are going to be available even when Nikon releases a newer model.
7) Picture quality is excellent.
8) Battery life is excellent.
9) 3x built-in optical zoom is a lot for this price range.
10) Great price for all the features.
Here's what you may miss or be annoyed by with this camera:
1) No direct firewire to the camera. There is USB, though.
2) The camera is so small that when you attach some lenses (I have the 19mm wide-angle--WC-E68), the optical viewfinder is partially obscured. This doesn't affect the picture, of course. You just have to use the LCD viewfinder to see the whole picture. It's no problem for me personally.
3) Battery has to be removed to recharge.
4) An AC adapter for powering the camera while the battery's out is not included, although one can be purchased separately.
5) Two different adapters--UR-E4 and UR-E7--are required for some attachment lenses....
Most of these "annoyances", though, are comparable to what you'll find on other cameras in this price range.

(More customer reviews)Although the purchase process, the price, and the delivery were excellent, I have to say that buying in a non-specialized place like Amazon could lead to what happen to me: the short description of the item states "Nikon UR-E18 Converter Adapter for use with FC-E9 Fisheye Lens", and that is what I was looking for: an adapter for a FC-E9 fisheye lens for my Nikon 8400. BUT this adapter is for a Nikon 8800, and for my Nikon 8400 I need the UR-E16 that Amazon does not have. Also, I looked in the detailed technical description and there is not information about the camera. My fault? Yes, maybe, but hopefully this comment will help others to look or ask more details on some products. Finally, I got the adapter in a specialized photography store in Canada.

The only reason I didn't give it the top rating is because there is no pocket for storing an extra memory card or battery. The leather is soft and offers good protection.

(More customer reviews)This is the first time that I bought something new on the market. Typically, I buy something after it has been reviewed for at least 6 months, but I had to replace the "family point and shoot" before Easter. I was replacing my old Nikon Coolpix 5900 (which was a little bulky, but took FANTASTIC photos). I also loved the video quality. I stayed with the Nikon family because it is what I know, and I just am not ready to pay so much for the Canon lines (and I don't like the photo quality - can't explain, but I like my Nikon better).
I got the camera 2 weeks ago, and so far I have found:
1) That it is incredibly small - which is good and bad. It can go anywhere, but holding it makes you kind of nervous, like you could drop it easily.
2)The large viewscreen is large, and I am very worried that I may drop it and shatter it easily. The camera itself is very smooth, and feels "slippery" in your hands.
3) The one complaint that I know I even had with my old Nikon - shutter/recovery time is slow with this camera - you can't just "click" away. This is not so nice when you have fidgety children, and you want to capture a moment.
4) The scene/mode setup has slightly changed for me, and to get to a different "mode", you can't just turn the dial, like I did on the old 5900, you have to push a few more buttons. This will be tedious when you are moving from different environments, and want to alter the settings.
5) The biggest complaint I have is that this camera is has a very sensitive at autofocusing, and based on what I have seen so far, it will not take pictures closeup unless you actually set it at the macro mode.
I don't think I will return it because I have found that unfortunately, these new digital cameras don't seem to last, and I won't invest over $200 for a point and shoot. This is good for quick shots when you are out on the go, and can fit in your back pocket. For the better photos, I use my D80 (it is a dream).
4/4/08 UPDATE - I have used the camera a little more. I have noted that:
1) to get the shots to come out, you really have to become quite knowledgeable with how to adjust your settings (exposure compensation, mode, light source, white balance, etc.) READ THE MANUAL, and PRACTICE. Once you figure that out, your pictures are fine. This does get a little tedius when you are trying to capture that moment with fidgeting subjects (i.e. children & animals).
2) Also, the movies are not MPG's anymore they are now in the AVI format. They still turn out fine, and the mic is SUPERSENSITIVE
3) The latch for the battery compartment is still the same - this worries me because this is what failed on my 5900, (and my mom's Canon). Once that went out, (and we went on vacation), the camera was never the same (i.e. beach air, sand, AC - you do the math). You would think they would fix this problem, but I am seeing it with not just one line, but others as well.
4) I am not a real fan of the way you switch from regular camera, to a specific scene (i.e. indoors, niteshots, etc), to movie mode. You have to push a MODE button, scroll, and then push OK. The buttons on the back are the same as my old 5900, just a little smaller (men with big fingers could get annoyed easily).
5) The on/off button is TINY and is right in next to the button that you use to take the photos/and take videos (at the top of the camera). Honestly, I confuse them at times, and will turn the camera off when I want to begin a video.

All in all,If I could do all over again, I wouldn't go ultracompact and would go more compact. It serves it's purpose, but remember - you are getting what you paid for.
UPDATE 1/9/09: By September 08, I had to get another camera because this one decided to break down on my family vacation - I am TRULY not a fan of this camera (the Lens just decided to not open and close). I will just give it to my 4 yr old, and let her play with it. I gambled and got the waterproof Pentax, and so far, I am pleased (not elated, but will be satisfied for now).

It attaches easily (but it is easy to lose the small detachable connector hatch fromt he camera bottom, so be sure to secure it in the appropriate hollow with a flexible adhesive like rubber cement if you will normally use the battery pack). The pack also allows one to use a variety of fixed charge or rechargable AA batteries, a major boon when the native Lithium Ion batteries become difficult to charge or at the end of their lives. Highly recommended accessory (but it will take up almost as much room in your camera bag as the camera itself.)

(More customer reviews)Many years ago I did quite a bit of photography; and so I know what it takes to get a great photo. Unfortunately the digital cameras, particularly the small ones, have been hampered by slow ability to capture light, and thus get clear pictures in Low light without a flash, or get great shots at High Speeds. Also the digital camera's ability to distinguish between a strong backlight, faces, a variety of scenes, like bright sun, shade, cloudy days, indoor light, has been poor, but gradually getting better across the last 4 years. This Nikon S620, solves all of those problems. All of these situations are corrected in this camera automatically if you want to just point and shoot. It is a master of computer engineering. For several years now with most of the strong brands, you could get good pictures in all the above situations, by correcting for red eye, selecting special scenes, and using tripods in low light. What I wanted to see if, with this Nikon, IF you set it to complete auto, you could get great pictures. Has the computer advanced far enough, where it could anticipate all these situations and give you a great picture? Answer is a resounding yes. I have tested this for a month, and I love it so much; I have now bought one for one of my daughters. This model as some professional reviews have said is a bit more practical for everyday situations, because of the wide angle. What it lacks in the Zoom, though the S630 is tempting; it makes up in speed, to handle all the above situations well. The controls are easy to operate. The high Megapixel count let you crop photos closer and still have a great picture; like the one I uploaded with the bird nesting. The anti-shake /vibration works well; to give you almost always clear shots, in these difficult situations.
UPDATE MAY 7th. : I looked at the S630 Product page and noticed 6 reviews, all but one positive. The one negative review, talks about noise in pictures and poor performance in low light. The speed rating of the 620 is much higher than the 630, at native resolution; thus resulting in sharper pictures in the extremes of photography, low light and high speed. I belive by my own photo's the 620 is a remarkable advancement in giving excellent pictures acorss the range. I am not saying, to not buy the 630; only that the powerful zoom in such a small camera is not without compromise. Thus there may be issues with that camera when used as an all around camera. If you are looking for an excellent all around camera; the Nikon S620 is THE one to buy!

(More customer reviews)I own both the Nikon 8800 and 8400. These cameras are a perfect pair with the 8800 telephoto capabilities and the 8400 wide angle. If I had to choose between the two, I'd go with the 8400. It is smaller, lighter and can be dropped in a coat pocket. Both cameras can go between full manual to completely auto. There are a good number of scene modes as well. In essence they are identical other than the zoom and image stabalization on the 8800 (necessary with the 10x zoom).

(More customer reviews)I'm not a fan of proprietary batteries but I couldn't find an alternative. These work but need frequent recharging and, according to Nikon, must be completely drained before doing so (lest they build a short memory). If you opt for these, buy a spare foursome for back-up.

(More customer reviews)I needed a good camera and didn't want to spend a lot of coin. I picked this one b/c it had the lithium-ion rechargeable battery and was 10 megapixel. It's super easy to use and has great features. I have taken some close ups of things (macro) and I'm blown away by the detail quality. For [...] bucks, I don't know how you could beat this. Some of the shots i've taken already look professional and I don't even really know how to fully use it yet.

THE ABOVE WAS MY ORIGINAL REVIEW. BELOW IS THE UPDATE:
This camera seemed fine for me at the time, but despite VERY LIGHT USE and always having it in a protective case and proper handling, it didn't even last a year and a half. The lens wouldn't open and despite several attempts to fix it (using various methods found online as this is a common problem), nothing worked. My option was to try to get it fixed for more than the camera is worth. Now it is a $150 paper weight. Complete junk.
Bought a Canon PowerShot SX130 IS and am far happier: better pics, better video, easier to use. For lower end stuff like this, I would go with Canon. While Nikon may make great high end cameras, their consumer grade stuff seems like junk.

I tried out many cameras in stores before finding this one and so far have been very, very pleased. I am able to quickly capture my kids smiles and the pictures are super clear. Plus, you are able to zoom while in movie mode. The 7x optical zoom is fantastic. I love that I can touch up photos right on the camera and right from the get go the camera was easy to use. I find that the buttons are set up very well in a user friendly manner.
